2025. Directed by Brittany Shyne. 123 minutes. Not rated.
Seeds is a lyrical portrait of Black generational farmers in the American South. Interweaving the stories of three families, the film creates a collective and intimate portrait of farming today, a moving exploration of their lives, joys, and struggles, and of the fragility of legacy and land ownership.
Through scenes of cotton harvesting, chasing cows, and mending broken machinery, Seeds honors farmers' deep connection to heritage and place while confronting a sobering truth: only a fraction of the 16 million acres once owned by Black farmers remains today. In moments of warmth and resilience, this black and white film reveals the enduring strength of memory, legacy, and hope.
There is no part of “Seeds” that doesn’t feel like a priceless heirloom, like a window into a critical cultural history that must be maintained or lest be permanently lost. It isn't just a stunning portrait of the people who labor not only to feed the world. It's also about a lifestyle that runs counterintuitive to the exploitative forces in which many of us live our lives.” – Roger Ebert.com
